Hello blog world!
I hope that you all are having a wonderful, restful weekend! I know that I am. I have been spending the weekend at my parents’ house. I love these weekends, mainly because I get to see my kitties, Beatrice and Irvin. But I also like spending girl time with my mom. Usually we go on a few adventures and try out some new recipes.
This weekend was rather low-key, but we did manage to squeeze in some baking. We made granola a la Carrots N Cake, as well as some oatmeal wheat bread. The granola was tasty, and so was the bread; however, we have been having issues with getting our breads to rise lately. Can anyone give us some tips?
We did go on a small adventure to my FAVORITE location: Amazing Savings! I purchased another $20 worth of goodies, mostly some Amy’s soup for quick work lunches on the days when I don’t have any leftovers to bring. Because of the high sodium content, I try to bring these when I am really pressed for time. Can you believe that Amazing Savings sells these soups for a mere $0.79 (vs. retail price of $2.29)?
What I like best about shopping at Amazing Savings is that I can buy some interesting goodies at a discount price that I could not afford if I were purchasing them at a traditional grocery store. For instance, I picked up two flavors of Sahale Snacks Glazed nuts. Amazing Savings price? $1.99. Publix price? $5.69!!! These bags contain a 4, ¼ cup servings of nuts. No way I would’ve tried them at their retail price. I can buy 1 pound of almonds for around $6.00.
Here’s what the taste test revealed:
Almonds with Cranberries, Honey + Sea Salt
Description on packaging: “We start with whole almonds and the finest orange blossom honey, add our naturally dried cranberries and top them with toasted sesame seeds and sea salt for an exquisite salty-sweet symmetry. Our light glaze adds just the right amount of sweetness.”

Not bad, but a little too sweet for my taste buds. They have a slightly salty aftertaste, which was a nice punch. Overall, I thought they tasted too doctored up with flavorings. I prefer my nuts to taste more natural. Even for the price of $1.99, I probably wouldn’t purchase them again. I think I could easily make a more tasty version of these at home. A future featured recipe perhaps?
The next flavor was:
Almond PB&J with Peanuts + Berries
Description on packaging: “Reminiscent of the beloved PB&J sandwich, our whole almonds are paired with peanuts, and complimented with the summertime taste of raspberries and strawberries.”

I liked this flavor best. But again, a little too much sweet. I definitely tasted the jelly but not so much the peanut butter. I might buy these again if I were to come across them at Amazing Savings, but I certainly wouldn’t pay retail price for them. Stay tuned. I’m going to have to experiment a “healthy” glazed nut recipe.
Now for the last Amazing Savings find. I was uber excited when I saw this:
Dagoba Organic Chocolate

Dagoba Organic Chocolate in the lavender blueberry flavor for $0.99 (retails for $3.45). Dark chocolate, lavender essence, & wild blueberries. Doesn’t it sound like the perfectly decadent treat? I simply could not wait until after dinner to give it a try. As soon as I left Amazing Savings and got in the car, I carefully opened the package, and the smell of lavender wafted through the air. I broke off a piece of the chocolate, put it in my mouth, and practically choked on the strong lavender taste. I mean, this is NOT subtle. Kind of like eating potpourri.
To be fair, I tasted it again while writing this review, and my opinion has changed slightly. This chocolate is definitely an acquired taste. One should not delve into eating this bar with the expectation of the traditionally smooth, milky taste of the average chocolate bar. The taste is, however, interesting. I would recommend eating one square at a time as one sips green tea and ponders the meaning of life.
I haven’t given up on Dagoba yet. As I was browsing their site, I found a chocolate bar called Seeds. Description: hemp, pumpkin and sunflower seeds united with dark chocolate and Balinese sea salt. Embrace the world of salty and sweet. I hope I run into this one at Amazing Savings sometime in the near future!
Unfortunately, not one item that I have reviewed thus far on LHP has been one that I would recommend. Read my review of goji berries and you will get the picture.
But guess what? The last product that I’m going to share today is a tasty delight. I came across this treat in Publix, and I knew that I had to try it! (FYI-It’s buy-one-get-one free at Publix right now!)
Edy’s Yogurt Blends Tart Mango

Edy’s Slow Churned Yogurt Blends Tart Mango was exceptionally delicious! If only it featured a more natural ingredient list… Oh well, everything in moderation!
This frozen yogurt is smooth and creamy, with swirls of tangy mango. The taste reminded me of the yogurt-flavored gelato that I ate every single day when I traveled to Italy. I can’t wait to try the Tart Honey variety!
Here I am in Italy holding up the leaning tower of Pisa. This picture is about 4 and 1/2 years old!

Has anyone else tried the products that I reviewed? Do you agree with my opinions? Do unhealthy foods often taste better than those that are healthy?
Lurkers, I know you’re there! Please make my day and comment!

Oh my gosh, just the other day I was in Publix and saw that package of PB&J and nearly swiped one. I can’t wait to hear your DIY version! And I’ve been branching out more in the dark chocolate department lately, but sea salt is still my definite fave! I’ve seen the lavender but have always been a little leery. As someone who’s grown up savoring cheap Hershey’s, I doubt I’d like something that gourmet-y!
LOL! Thankfully I am not a fan of trying out new things so I never have to worry about not liking something!
I LOVE SAHALE!

I only try new (especially expensive) food if I can get it on sale. I love BOGOF sales for this purpose. Some people can eat anything–not me, if I don’t like it I can not eat it!
I have not tried any of these products, not have I even seen any of them in stores! I figure you are probably shopping at Whole Foods, or another “natural” store. I just don’t frequent places like that, as they are too expensive for my liking! Every once in a while I will splurge on some expensive products, but it’s rare. I like to make my own “Bars” and granola. Or, I like it when people give them to me! My aunt and uncle are big on health food products and they give me what they don’t like, haha.
I HAVE had the Edy’s slow churned frozen yogurt, just not that exact flavor. I love it. I will have to check out this flavor though, it sounds really good!
Actually, I rarely shop at Whole Foods. I’m lucky to live near a very small chain of stores in NC and SC called Amazing Savings. They sell Whole Foods’ (and various other “natural” stores’) products for very reasonable prices.
Other than Amazing Savings, I shop at my local grocery store.
Great reviews- I’ve tried those nuts and agree that they’re too sweet! I’m having trouble imagining what lavender would taste like? Seems interesting…
I think healthy foods taste better (if they’re fresh)!
I love the pic with the leaning tower! I really want to take a pic like that someday! That would include visiting Italy, which I would love to do!
I feel like unhealthy foods can sometimes taste better, but that’s because of the chemistry that goes into a manufactured product. A whole, raw, organic apple can be so delicious, but once you start eating the processed foods they can become addicting and you forget about the healthy ones.
Just found your website after trying some Sahale nuts (cranberry and honey), I LOVED them, and didn’t think they were too sweet, though if they were less sweet I think I would still love them. I actually came to this sight hoping for a similar recipe. Did you ever do one?? I would love to try making some of these almonds for myself.
I haven’t tried any of them yet, but I was looking at the Dagoba chocolate tonight. It looked really good but I went with my old stand by, green & black’s.
