Body Attack

I’m visiting Stephen in the South Carolina Lowcountry this weekend.  Last night when I arrived, he had a glorious plate prepared for me.

polloedited

Pollo al Chipotle! This is one of our top 10 favorites.  We ordered it countless times from Senior Tequila’s (local Mexican restaurant) before Stephen perfected his own version of the recipe.  Now we just prepare and eat it at home.  The sauce on the chicken is not particularly healthy (it’s made with a lot of heavy cream) but this dish is oh-so-good!  I’m sure that I will be posting it on here sooner or later.

I called it an early night because…I wanted to get up by 6:45 in order to make the 8 a.m. Body Attack class.  One of the best things about visiting Stephen is that I can attend my old gym.  Stephen often jokes that I secretly visit him for Body Attack rather than his company.  He’s quite perceptive!  (Kidding.)

The area that I’m doing my internship in has so much to offer, but unfortunately, nice gyms are not its strong suit.  I’m most disappointed in the offering of group fitness classes.  Mainly because I miss my Body Attack!

General Information

Body Attack is the most fun and challenging group fitness class that I have ever participated in.  Les Mills is the Australian company that created the program.  Their classes are attended by people in gyms around the world.  They have created a variety of programs: Body Pump, Body Step, Body Flow, Body Jam, Body Vive, and RPM.  But Body Attack is definitely my favorite because it will whip you into shape!

What does Body Attack look like?  I tried to find a good YouTube clip, and this was the best that I could find.

Have you ever tried doing 32 plyometric lunges in a row?  It hurts!  But in a good way because plyometrics are highly effective at increasing muscle mass and cardiovascular strength.  The best thing about the class is that it offers both high and low options.  So if 32 plyometric lunges doesn’t sound so fun, you can do 16 regular lunges instead.  There’s even a lower option of doing a box step if lunges just aren’t for you.  The instructor is trained to lead the class through a workout that is the right intensity for each participant.

Class Format

A Body Attack class consists of 12, 5 minute songs or tracks.

Track 1- warm up

Track 2- mixed impact

Track 3- aerobic

Track 4- plyometric*

Track 5- upper body conditioning (chest and tricep pushups)

Track 6- running

Track 7- agility

Track 8- interval

Track 9- power*

Track 10- lower body conditioning

Track 11- abs

Track 12- cooldown

*Tracks 4 and 9 are always the most intense.  They are called “peaks.”

Music

Did I mention that Body Attack always has a killer soundtrack?  It does.  A lot of the songs are current top 40 hits and others are songs that you probably haven’t heard before.  The music always fits the workout and motivates you to give your all.

I hope that Body Attack comes to my area soon because I want to be first on the list to become an instructor!

If you want more info, click here: Body Attack.  This link is the official website.  You can read about the class format, learn the basic moves, and watch a video about the most recent release.

Any Attackers or Attack instructors out there?  Do you love Body Attack as much as I do?

Thanks for stopping by my blog and continuing to read. I’ve never heard of Body Attack, but it sounds interesting. Hope I can try it someday.

Isn’t it the best when you figure out how to make a recipe at home and even make it healthier?

Hahaha, I hated Body Attack!! But in the good “this is SO hard” kinda hate ;) My gym offers all the Les Mills classes too. I love them! At first I was kinda iffy about pre-choreographed classes with a set soundtrack. But they are set up SO well. And you’re right, the music is killer. I’m not much of a remix or dance type person, but the music they choose is perfect for the activity.

Still not going back to Body Attack though. Think I’ll stick to my RPM and Body Step :P

Body Attack! I love that format.

But can you please attack me now and take this 4th piece of buttered bread away from me? Ack!

  7. Back when I lived in Virginia, my gym had the Les Mills stuff. I loved Body Pump and Body Flow. My new gym has the Group stuff (Group Centergy, etc.). I have only been to one Group class, Group Centergy, and didn’t like it as well as body flow. I felt like it moved really quickly. Maybe it was my mood that day. Also, the workout I attended didn’t have hip openers, which were one of my favorites.
I could try again. Glad you like Body Attack, sounds intense!
