General Tso’s Tofu

While Stephen and I were on our Amazing Savings Road Trip, we discovered a find!

gentso

Stephen picked up this treasure, deciding that we should make our own General Tso’s chicken for dinner.  Remembering a recent Whole Foods trip, I had something different in mind.  I wanted to recreate the General Tso’s tofu from the hot bar!

In December, I won a giveaway for a free Nasoya product from a giveaway  hosted by Lexi.  I was excited to finally use my coupon, deciding to purchase the extra firm variety.

package

I drained the water from the container then squeezed excess liquid from the tofu by squeezing it between two paper towels.  After that, I cut the tofu into cubes.  Easy as pie.

Next, preheat the oven to 375.

Then comes my favorite part…

cocoil

Greasing the pan!  I don’t like to use the spray butter stuff.  So I usually grease my pans with coconut oil.  It’s kinda messy, but it’s fun!

coconutoil

Tropical Traditions sent me some virgin coconut oil to try, and I love it!  I’ve been buying coconut oil a lot lately, and of the brands I’ve tried, this is my favorite.  Right now, the 32 oz. jar is on sale for $27.50.  Not a bad price by coconut oil standards!  Especially considering the care that this company takes to provide unrefined, quality coconut oil.  You can read more about how Tropical Traditions Gold Label Virgin Coconut oil is made here.

After greasing the pan, its time to marinate.

I simply poured the General Tso’s sauce into a container.

And then I dipped the tofu directly into the sauce.

The tofu then goes on to the greased baking sheet.

Bake for 15 minutes at 375.

flipRemove from oven and flip.  Tongs would be helpful!  But I’m using a skewer/knife combo.  After flipped, you may wish to brush the top of the tofu with more marinade.

Bake for 15-20 more minutes, and remove from oven.

In order to get “crispier” texture, remove from baking sheet and sauté tofu, canola oil, and more marinade in a skillet at medium heat for no more than a minute-tofu burns easily!

meal

Serve General Tso’s tofu with jasmine rice and broccoli.  :-)

I like your idea of coating the tofu. Sometimes, I feel like it doesn’t get enough of the flavor I want on it. Sweet Beatrice!

  3. Your tofu look seriously good! I love when tofu has a sweet glaze and gets all crispy :D
My favorite olympic sport would have to be gymnastics too

  4. Lily,

I’m going to have to echo Sophia, Paula & Danielle’s comments – your tofu look soooo good! I have been trying to limit my tofu intake (because most brands are so highly processed), but this is too good to pass up! Do you have any brand recommendations?

True to my Canadian roots, my fave Winter Olympic sport to watch has to be Men’s Hockey:)

  5. Lily says:

I do love hockey! We used to have a minor league team nearby, but it folded a few years ago. :-(

I only enjoy tofu on occasion. Nasoya was the first tofu product I have bought in years. I liked it though!

  6. My favorite Chinese restaurant in my hometown makes the BEST “fake” General Tso’s using tofu skin (sounds crazy but is incredibly good!). I am an Olympics junkie. I don’t think I could pick a favorite event, but if I HAD to I’d say fencing because in the past two Olympics a friend of mine has won a gold medal!

  7. Stef says:

mine is gymnastics too! i used to be a gymnast, but obviously never came close to the olympics lol. oh and red quinoa tastes like regular quinoa to me, but it’s more fun to look at!
