U-G-L-…….I?

While grocery shopping last week, I came across an ugly sight.

ugli

Have you ever seen an ugli fruit?  The name doesn’t lie.  The outside of the fruit is truly atrocious!

But the inside is much more attractive.  It looks similar to that of a grapefruit.

An ugli fruit is actually created by crossing an grapefruit with an orange or a tangerine.

The taste is similar to a grapefruit’s, yet it is tad bit sweeter.

Ugli Facts

Selection:

Color is not important when selecting an ugli fruit.  The skin can range from yellow to green to yellow-green to orange.  Choose the ugli fruit that is heaviest for its size.  Keep in mind the fruit should give with slight pressure.

Storage:

The ugli fruit can last 5 days at room temperature or 2 weeks in the refrigerator.

Preparation:

I would recommend cutting the fruit in half and eating it like a grapefruit.  I found the outer portion of the sections to be quite bitter.

Season:

Ugli fruits are in season from December through April.  (Interestingly, this was the first time I’d seen one in my grocery store.)

All in all, I was pleased with the ugli fruit.  It reminded me a lot of the pomelo I taste tested in January.  It was a great citrus alternative!  Although, for the price of $1.99, it is a good deal more expensive than your average grapefruit, orange, or tangerine.

Question: What’s the strangest fruit or veggie you’ve ever tried?

Saw those at whole foods the other day :) Wasn’t sure what it was, but now I want to try one.

  2. I’ve heard of ugli fruit but never tried it. I’ve never actually seen it at the grocery store, but the name is kind of a turn off, right? Anyway, I might try it now that I know it tastes good.
I saw quince at the grocery store once and wanted to try a new fruit so I bought it…but it was awful. I don’t think people really eat it as is…its more used for jellies and stuff. So that experiment was a fail!

  3. Haha, I thought YOU named it ugli (as in ugly) cos the skin is so gross looking :P I’ve never heard of that fruit! I’ve tried pomelo, which was probably my most unusual – it was also DISGUSTING.
I’ve had lychees and papaya…that’s about the extent of exotic fruit where I am :P oh, and star fruit/dragonfruit/sharonfruit! They’re all a bit odd :)

  4. I’ve seen that ugly fruit before and later read it’s really healthy. I guess you can’t always judge a book by it’s cover. ;-)

  5. the ugliest smelliest fruit is the durian…asians LOVE it. please google it..NASTYYYY but…kinda tasty..

  7. I might have to try those…I hate grapefruit because it is too sour but I love oranges. So maybe this will be the perfect combination! Happy Monday Lily!
